Rented ded. server - char selection

Is there a way to force character? It random assigns one when you login to the server. I really don't want to play as the one I have and it doesn't change when you log out/in. I also have a friend that will not play with the char given. There should be a way to access the save file and assign the character to player. I tried downloading the .sav but it's not text so idk. I don't know much about any of this stuff so any help would be appreciated.

Does your friend dislike black people?

Actually there is no option to change character user wise but I heard this will be added to the final release of the game.
